And for those juvenile and older dogs, consolidating the basic skills and proofing behaviours outside the home environment is the next step. Training and having fun with your dog never stops – it is a lifetime investment!

PUPPY PRE-SCHOOL

Most Vets will tell you that Puppy pre-school is an important part of your new puppy’s social development. And we couldn’t agree more! Up to 16 weeks of age your puppy’s brain is like a sponge, absorbing all the sights, sounds, smells etc. of their new environment. It is also when their curiosity outweighs their fear, making it a critical time to help them adjust to their new pack (your family) and the human world.

Puppy Pre-school runs for 4 weeks (normally Monday evenings) and is for puppies aged 8 – 16 weeks. Puppy Pre-School focuses on the basics with the emphasis on socialisation and helping your puppy adjust to their new home and wider environment. It also about helping you the owner with any concerns or problems you may be experiencing. Life with a new puppy can be a challenge for owners as well. Topics include toilet training, mouthing, jumping, digging, first aid, nutrition options, vet and grooming desensitisation tips etc. Your puppy will also be introduced to some basic obedience skills such as sit, down and stay.

HOW TO ENROL

To attend puppy pre-school your puppy must have had its first vaccinations. If you would like to enrol in puppy pre-school or find out more please call us on 6454 9318 or you can fill in the enrolment form below.

Dog Personal Training & Behaviourist

A well-mannered, socialised and confident dog is a family member most owners hope to enjoy. Like us, dogs need boundaries and need to feel part of a pack. They are social animals and need foundational skills to help cope with life’s challenges. We are dedicated to assisting you with all your dog training needs and helping your dog overcome any etiquette issues. Whether it be jumping, dog reactivity, excitement, pulling on the lead, barking, not coming when called etc. no dog is ever too young or too old to learn obedience and become a well mannered member of the family. Obedience training helps you, the dog owner, develop confident dog handling skills, establish your role as the leader and to create a strong and loving bond with your dog.

Holistic Paws = WaggyTails offer personalised consults in and around Busselton. Our expert dog behaviourist can help you understand and implement strategies for dealing with complex dog behaviours such as anxiety and aggression. Dogs Laughing

Frequently Asked Questions

In some cases your dog may be showing patterns that are not from boredom or lack of obedience.

Dogs who exhibit the following behavioural issues may be anxious due to separation:

  • depression
  • barking, howling
  • chewing, scratching (destroying your furniture, personal items or even the house itself
  • toileting
  • accidents
  • drooling
  • pacing
  • self harm

Separation Anxiety is a dog’s inability to cope or function when left alone. This is very different to boredom as your dog is under severe stress experiencing a range of physiological reactions such as increased heart rate, blood pressure, a surge in adrenaline and cortisol hormones and panting.

Punishing your dog is not the answer. They need your help. Give them the support and care they deserve with anxiety training. Our professional dog trainers can handle any issue your dog has and work with you to find a solution to the problem you are facing.

Does your dog bark, growl and lunge at other dogs or people? Does your dog resource guard, i.e. growl or even go to bite if you try to take food, a toy or does he think he needs to protect you? In most cases aggressive nature and reactivity are normally fear based or created through lack of leadership and structure.

When your dog suffers from reactivity, your dog and your loved ones can find it very challenging and sometimes overwhelming. These problems are generally overcome with a counter conditioning and desensitisation program. Counter conditioning is a treatment process that changes an animal’s fearful, anxious or aggressive reaction to a pleasant, relaxed one and desensitisation is the process of exposing your dog to a stimulus beginning at a very low intensity.

Here, at Holistic Paws=Waggy Tails, we may also recommend animal Kinesiology when helping with fear and aggression. By accessing the brain pathways of the amygdala (your dog’s survival emotions and fight/flight centre) we can help your dog on an emotional/mental level as well. Combined with the appropriate training it often gives results much faster.

Our expert trainers know how to work with your dog’s needs & temperament. With dedication and commitment most dogs can show great improvement and lead much happier lives!

Training a puppy should start as early as 6-8 weeks after birth. Ideally, your pup should have had the first deworming and first set of vaccines. It is important to start early to make sure your furry friend grows into a well-behaved adult dog.

Aside from behavioural benefits, puppy classes also enable little pups to be more confident and friendly. Since they meet other pups and learn to play appropriately and share, it sets the foundation for future dog interactions.
